[ELTeCS_PERU] Fwd: Greetings

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourthThursday of November. Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated with family, enjoying a meal often featuring turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is also a time to be thankful, remember and cherish all the things you have been blessed with.

While preparing some material on Thanksgiving to share with my colleagues, I came across a text on the rippling effects of thoughts that reinforced my ideas about what I call the multiplying effect of our lives. I would like to share this with you as well.

I strongly believe that each of us carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others, this is much more so if we are educators.

Read more on this and enjoy a musical card and worksheets that may be useful for your students on mumimaria.blogspot.comand mumimariatefl.blogspot.com

[ELTeCS_PERU] INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR TOLERANCE

International Day for Tolerance

16 Nov 2013

16 November every year: Encouraging respect, dialogue and cooperation among different cultures, civilizations and peoples.
Tolerance by Glenda Sims - click to view on flickr.comIn 1996, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November, with activities for both educational establishments and the wider public. Find out more on the UN Website or the UNESCO Promoting Tolerance web page.
What shall we do in our schools to reflect on this day?
In our humble opinion, there should be the International Day of Respect rather than tolerance . What do you think?
We would be delighted to have your say in our Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/pages/IATEFL-Peru/

English Instruction through STEM Subjects

Nov 07, 2013 10:18 am | Andean Region RELO

By guest blogger Dan Presson
www.stem4esl.org
Recently David Fay posted an article titled “Making the Most of 300 Hours.” In his article David outlined several recommendations for language instruction, including making a connection to other subjects, subjects such as science and Mathematics. Science and Mathematics are often referred to as STEM (Science – Technology – Engineering – Mathematics) fields. The importance of connecting STEM subjects to language instruction cannot be overemphasized.
Language instruction is best done when using the 5 C’s of language acquisition – Connections, Communication, Culture, Comparisons, and Communities. Using STEM subjects is an effective way of utilizing the five C’s. Science, technology, and engineering connect the learner to the natural world, focus on communications, emphasize the universal culture and communities of these disciplines, and require comparisons.  The hands-on experiential learning inherent in STEM disciplines makes vocabulary meaningful, connecting the learner to the natural world.
The Spanish speaker has an advantage with STEM subjects in English.  There are over 600,000 words in the English language, about a third of which are Latin in origin, and thus usually have equivalents in Spanish.  STEM disciplines from A to Z — aerospace, computer and electronic technology, civil and bio-engineering, medical, and zoology — contain tens of thousands of easily recognizable words.  Also, STEM field texts are typically written in a more formal academic style and thus support a learner’s use of academic language.  This more formal register is often overlooked in schools.
If the learner is within a STEM discipline, the language instruction can be easier
from navy.comfrom navy.com
because the learner understands STEM concepts and already has extensive STEM vocabulary. Since STEM fields focus largely on the process of observation, note-taking, and drawing conclusions, less weight is placed on right or wrong answers.  This takes considerable stress away from the student.
Most importantly, EFL teachers need not feel burdened by being experts in the STEM fields.  The ELF teacher’s job is to teach the language, not the subject.  Exploring the natural world should become a collaborative effort.  Not only does a teacher team up with the students, but also with science and math teachers in order to synchronize the effort.  One added benefit is that the content teachers can practice their English as well.
Overall, STEM content should be seen as an additional resource for the ESL teacher, and a very effective one at that.

[ELTeCS_PERU] Some material to share

Saturday 21st was International Peace Day and World Gratitude Day,  a good opportunity to say Thanks to all the ones who have contributed to  my personal and professional growth and keep trying hard to contribute to Peace.

In Peru, September is spring time so I thought that to celebrate all these events I could share some material to raise awareness of these two important values: Peace and Gratitude. I also added a worksheet for doing Spring crafts, a link for a spring game for the little ones, e-cards that may prompt discussions for those in secondary school and a Brain Teaser activity  for Primary.

I have included all the sources where I took them from so you can explore and find whatever you need to meet your particular objectives on your own.
You can find them at http://mumimariatefl.blogspot.com/

Dear friends

Tomorrow is International Peace Day and World Gratitude Day,   I´d like to say Thanks to all the ones who have contributed to  my personal and professional growth and keep trying hard to contribute to Peace.

[ELTeCS_PERU] Fw: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 21 Sep‏

 International Day of Peace

21 Sep 2013

21 September every year: Calling on all nations to observe a day of global ceasefire and non violence.
This year, 2013, the International Day of Peace is on a Saturday, September 21st, and special activities and celebrations will take place all across the world over the 2013 Peace Day Weekend, including festivals, concerts, a global Peace Wave with moments of silence at noon in every time zone, and much more. Declared by the UN General Assembly in 2001, the International Day of Peace calls on all nations to observe a day of global ceasefire and non-violence inviting all people around the world to honour a cessation of hostilities. By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted a specific day and collaborative focus on worldwide peace and encouraged all of humanity to work in cooperation for this goal. During the discussion of the U.N. Resolution that established the International Day of Peace, it was suggested that:International Day of Peace logo

Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, sitting in silent meditation. Or it can involve getting your co-workers, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. The impact if millions of people in all parts of the world, coming together for one day of peace, is immense, and does make a difference.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. . Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind.
Any ideas to celebrate this day ,to  reflect , we should say, in our schools , in our educational context  in Peru?
If so, please let us know sharing activities you are working on to  iatefl.pe@gmail.com
