Fwd: The Perfect Place to Spend Christmas- Winning Articles

First Place

THE PERFECT PLACE TO SPEND CHRISTMAS by Noelia Arcondo Vargas (San Borja. Advanced 6- 4:00pm)

Imagine the perfect place to spend a memorable Christmas, which you can share with the people you love, having fun and getting to know the authentic meaning of this celebration.

In Apurimac, located in the Peruvian Andes, you can live the true spirit of Christmas.  It is there where all temples show the nativity scene of Jesus in many creative ways inspiring peace and love. In this city, Christmas celebration is not only on the 25th of December, but actually from the beginning of December. Since then, you can feel and breathe Christmas mood; the streets are decorated with the typical coloured lights, there is advent celebration in the churches and tourists can enjoy dances and songs of consecration performed by the local people.

Spending Christmas in Apurimac renovates people’s hearts, filling them with joy and peace. This happens away from the common place which is full of problems, pollution and the greed for material possessions growing in our heart. In my personal experience, I must admit that travelling to Apurimac in these dates would make you feel as a little child expecting those new experiences that you will live.

Second Place

SHOULDN’T YOU COME BACK TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU WERE ONCE HAPPY? by Hugo Martel (Pueblo Libre. Advanced 4- 4:00pm)

From all the places I have been to, Göttingen is my favourite. I spent two and a half years there and I met the most interesting people I will ever know.

When Christmas arrives, the whole city turns into a big Christmas market. All around the place you can find colourful stalls, where they sell this delicious, traditional, cherry flavoured wine. However, what impressed me the most was the play show at the city hall every single year. As you get into the room, you’re given special effects, such as lights and whistles, so you can be part of the performance. For me, it was the first time I felt part of something bigger than me. A ball closes the night as the Town’s highest social event.

Having to spend Christmas away from my family was really hard for me. But I never felt lonely. Do you know why? Surrounded by heart-warming people in such a wonderful place with a huge variety of activities, how could ever feel lonely? From that moment on, this city became my family.

[ELTeCS_PERU] CTS Fifth Academic Event

Dear colleagues

It is with great pleasure that we closed our academic events on December 5th not only with full attendance but also with a good response to our request of taking presents to provide a different Christmas for some of the kids at A.A. H.H Saul Cantoral. Thanks very much for that!!!!

At the end of the V Facebook event,  the teachers who had done the Cambridge English First, TKT Young Learners, TKT CLIL and the CTS Course Teaching English Pronunciation received their Certificates. Some teachers even collected two Certificates having done the two TKTs or the Cambridge English First and a TKT showing that when there is a will there is a can. Some of them studied Saturdays and Sundays to be able to have a sound preparation for their exams and they certainly achieved their purpose.

We would like to thank our teachers of English not only for their effort but also for their inspiration. It really inspires us to see people who feel enthusiastic about their jobs, their lives and families. The good energy they transmit is contagious and oblige us to follow the example and get even more enthusiastic about what we do, thanks for having the faith to consider us as your trainers.

We would also like to thank Ms. Maricarmen Rosas, Marketing Manager of NUTESA for all  their support at providing us with the premises, the coffee breaks, the presents and the publicity for our events. Thanks to her and to Marita Duarte from SM for her always being there to lend us a hand.
It is certainly inspiring to work with this kind of people who know where they are going, that happily make every effort to reach their goals and are determined to achieve what they want with drive and enthusiasm.

We would like to share a link with scenes of our last event and remind those who pre-register for the Summer course and the courses: Cambridge English First and Developing English Skills that we will soon send their confirmation and course details.

Happy holidays everyone!!!!

[ELTeCS_PERU] Books books books and more books (only for book worms)

Sometimes it is difficult and expensive to find books in English here in the city of Lima. There are some shops that carry some titles -mainly mass market paperbacks of best sellers- that is why this piece of intelligence goes up in value. Tomorrow, in the Church of the Good Shepherd -Santa Cruz 491 Miraflores, from 10 am to 2 pm- there is going to be a second-hand book fair. It´s not the first time they have it. In fact, I have been there before and have been lucky to find excellent titles at incredible prices (they used to be three for S/. 10!!!). The hall is arranged so that the books wait for you spine-up on large tables, the eager readers line up and examine them, pick the ones they like and proceed to pay one of the volunteer ladies at the door. After that you may go home and start your reading, or you may want to sit at the tables at the back of the hall and have tea or scones or a sandwich or just hang around and talk to the book lovers who gather that day. I´ll be there early in the morning so that I can grab the good ones before they go away to other hands!
See you!

Re: [ELTeCS_PERU] The British Council is back‏

Dear Cesar

We may not have thanked you enough for your efforts in keeping this scheme alive and kicking but you are right. all those who benefit from ELTeCS know that it started as an initiative of the BC here, in Latin America and in other geographical areas providing lots of support to teachers of English. Thanks very much my dear friend for we know it is a demanding and not always pleasant job... and you have done it completely free of charge!!!.

I am sure there has been a misunderstanding and the BC will fix the problem soon since being part of ELTeCS has become a necessary addition to our efforts for communicating and continuing our professional development. I am sure the BC will continue the support to this and other initiatives-as they did in the past- that aim at spreading the British culture and improving the language proficiency of our colleagues.

All the best

M.Ed. Maria Luisa Mu

Dear ELTeCS PERU Members
The British Council is back. The news had been around for some time already but the official presentation had not occured until yesterday.
I am reporting this event indirectly, (since I was not part of the list of guests to the Embassy) and because I found out from a friend who posted a photo on Facebook today.
As you know this ELTeCS PERU group was started by me on behalf of the BC several years ago (if you read carefully, the group is introduced as being owned by the BC not me) and was kept active, even though the BC office in Lima closed, in an effort to keep their spirit alive among us teachers of English.
In any case, it is good news that the BC is back in town, and of course ELTeCS will go on no matter what.
Welcome back BC.
