At the British Council we're always looking for innovative ways to collaborate with you, our UK partners, to meet and support the global demand for English - helping teachers and learners access high quality resources, showcasing the best of British ELT materials, products and services, and promoting the UK as a study destination for learning English.  Our English in Brazil event took place in London this week. Delegates enjoyed a day of cutting-edge insights into the opportunities and challenges of the Brazilian English language market. We welcomed industry experts from both Brazil and the UK who shared their experiences on a range of areas from public and private education systems, to the demand for skills. We hope from this event that new partnerships will be formed and opportunities explored by the UK sector.  Last month we celebrated innovation in English language teaching at our annual ELTons Awards Ceremony. This year sees a diverse range of products winning a prestigious ELTon award. UK grant award winners this year include:   Dr Tineke Brunfaut and Gareth McCray (Lancaster University): their project explores cognitive processing whilst reading.    Dr John Field (University of Bedfordshire): his project explores the impact of single and double play on candidate behaviour in tests of L2 listening. Professor Steve Walsh and Professor Paul Seedhouse (Newcastle University): their project explores corpus-based study of interactive competence. English Teaching Graduate Scheme      Start the journey to getting qualified to work as an English teacher. Do you know someone who is unemployed and graduated in the last three years? Presented by Liz Soars The winners of the British Council ELTons, a celebration of innovation and excellence in English language teaching from around the world, were announced last month.    Sponsored by Cambridge English Language Assessment, awards were given in seven categories. This year sees a diverse range of products winning a prestigious ELTon award. These include a professional development programme using low-cost mobiles phones for teachers in Bangladesh and DVD readers that bring British TV to the classroom. Since last year, UK and international ELT professionals have competed alongside each other in the same categories - in recognition of the increased mobility and globalisation in the sector. You can also watch the winners' interviews and the awards ceremony.   Promoting the UK's English language teaching sector English Language Market reports: Japan and Russia Last month we launched our two latest English Language Market reports: Japan and Russia. These reports are part of a new series of comprehensive market studies to be produced as a collaboration between British Council and English UK in order to provide support for UK English language providers in recruiting students from overseas. The series is intended to help the sector maximise its business opportunities by understanding the parameters of demand in these key markets with up-to-date data and analysis. The English Effect - a virtual exhibition tour Watch a virtual tour of The English Effect exhibition on the British Council YouTube channel.    The exhibition examines the reasons why English is one of the UK's greatest assets - as well as exploring the benefits it brings to countries and people around the world, and giving an insight into its status as a global language that reflects its contact with countries and cultures throughout history.   The exhibition has three zones:   The first, Changing Lives, looks at the personal benefits the English language has brought to people around the world. The second zone, Economic Benefits, investigates the value of the English language to the UK economy - and the economic benefits for English-speaking countries around the world. In the third zone, A Global Language, a giant map of the world shows the extent to which English has evolved by absorbing words from other languages. June 5    World Environment Day   

World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

The World Environment Day celebration began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Everyone counts in this initiative and World Environment Day relies on you to make it happen! We call for action — organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community to do the same, stop food waste, walk to work, start a recycling drive . . . the possibilities are endless.

Webinar: Classroom interaction: Getting more out of coursebooks

There are many qualitative differences in course books, yet teachers in schools are often expected to use and follow them. Furthermore, the instructions in the accompanying teacher’s books can be very limited in interaction. This webinar will look at ways newer and aspiring teachers can employ tasks that exploit and/or supplement course books more effectively.
